Bring the concern to a medical visit
A visit with your regular doctor is a place to raise your question. Other options to compare are a clinic visit in person and a licensed service for telehealth.
Telehealth means care given remotely, such as by video, rather than sharing a room.
Describe what you want help with. Ask whether a medicine belongs in the plan, and what other options there are.
Will the visit assess my concern before choosing a treatment?
Being in Austin brings Texas rules into the visit
As of September 26, 2026, doctors treating people in Texas online generally need a full Texas medical licence.
The exception is for doctors who already held an out-of-state telemedicine licence on September 1, 2022.
Before paying a doctor who relies on that exception, check with the Texas Medical Board that the doctor is allowed to treat you.
Tell the service what your location will be during the visit. Ask how you can confirm that the clinician may treat you in that place.
Online care must meet the same medical care requirements as the same visit in a room, under Texas rules as of September 26, 2026.
Texas also requires informed consent before remote care: your agreement after the care is explained.
What a first online visit may involve
Texas allows a new patient to start care by video, or through a clinician’s review of useful health images or records, as of September 26, 2026.
Those records can include your health history, test results, or past prescriptions.
The records route does not require you and the clinician to be online at the same time; a phone conversation may be part of it.
A phone call by itself is not a listed way to start care with a new clinician.
For an existing patient, or when another clinician has agreed to answer calls for your usual clinician, Texas can allow a phone call alone.
Ask whether the clinician needs to speak with you, examine you, or order tests to assess your concern. Ask who will answer later questions.
When care starts through one of these online routes, Texas requires an explanation of what follow-up care is needed, as of September 26, 2026.
Leave with the plan in plain words
Before the visit, gather your medicine list, past test results, and the questions you want answered.
At the end, ask what happens next, who to reach, and how another clinician can receive the visit record.
